I’ve loved film my whole life and have always been fascinated with filmmaking. I might have been the only kid that I knew who’s favorite ride was the Tram Tour at Universal Studios. Well, favorite ride at Universal Studios at least…
And now I’ve been lucky enough to spend almost a decade working on the sound for films in post production. Most of the work that I’ve done has been as a recordist at 20th Century Fox (current position) in Los Angeles but I’ve also worked in Sydney, Australia and Northern California at Skywalker Ranch.
A recordist’s job is to manage all of the media created on the mixing stage, while also making sure that all of the sounds are getting to the right places on the mixing console. You work alongside the mixers, editors, and engineers to make sure that everything that is being created is being created correctly. At times it can be a very high pressure job with little room for error but also very interesting. I’ve had the pleasure of working on some great projects, ‘Super 8’, ‘Lincoln’, and ‘Avatar’, to name a few.
I’ve also been able to a bit of my own editing and mixing on short films, web series, and features films. This can be a very collaborative project and I have had nothing but great experiences with all of the directors that I’ve worked with.
